Djimon Hounsou was born in a poor family in Benin, Africa. He was the youngest of his five siblings. When he was 13 years old, their poverty became terrible. So, his parents sent Hounsou to his eldest brother in France. A new life started to Hounsou. He felt so happy to see tall and luxurious buildings in developed France. But within a few days, he understood that he became a burden to his poor brother. He left his brother and went to Paris to chase his luck.
He had no money, no house, and no friends in Paris. He used to wander in the streets. Life was so cruel to him. At night, he could not tolerate his hunger. He used to search stale bread in garbage and dustbins beside the roads. He used to eat it. Sometimes, he could not find stale bread in the garbage. He became a beggar to satisfy his hungry stomach. He slept under bridges, begged in the streets, and washed in the public fountains. He wanted to earn millions of dollars. But he had no education and no support. Sometimes he did small jobs but the salary was very very less. So he quit those jobs. He understood there was a long gap between his dream life and his present life. But he did not lose hope. He was waiting for a big change in his life. His luck changed when Hounsou turned 21. One day, a photographer saw him sleeping on a park bench and noted his unique face and startling features. He asked Hounsou "May I take a few photos of you?" But suspicious of the stranger, Hounsou refused.
The same photographer came to Hounsou again and requested him for photos. "By taking my photos, I lose nothing, " Hounsou thought. He accepted. The pictures of Hounsou taken by the photographer were sent to a modeling agency in Paris. The company directed him to the Parisian perfume manufacture and fashion designer Thierry Mugler. He met young Hounsou and talked to him. The fashion designer asked him what he was doing with his life and where he lived. Hounsou could not give a satisfactory reply. The fashion designer recruited him as a modal. As a new modal, Hounsou toured the world. He earned some money. He wanted to become an actor in Hollywood. In 1990, he went to America. He understood that his main barrier was language. He was very poor in English. He started learning English by reading grammar books and watching the Discovery channel. Daily he used to go to movie producing studios. Luckily he got offers in music videos. He worked with Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson, and Madonna.
Gradually he got offers on TV shows. He acted in four TV shows. Finally, Hounsou learned to speak English well. One of the most prominent Hollywood directors "Steven Spielberg" liked Hounsou's performance. Spielberg met him. Once again his life changed. Hounsou played the main role in Spielberg's fantastic movie "Amistad". Amistad is a story of African slaves in America.
The world was shocked by the mind-blowing performance of Hounsou. Many offers came to him. He started climbing the ladder of success. He acted in many Hollywood movies such as Gladiator (2000), the Island (2005), Blood Diamond (2006), Eragon (2006), The Tempest (2010), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Seventh Son (2014), Furious 7 (2015) and The Legend of Tarzan (2016), Legend of the Sword (2017), Same Kind of Different as Me (2017), Blazing Samurai (2018), and How to Train Your Dragon 3 (2019).
Hounsou became one of the top Hollywood stars. He earned millions of dollars. Oxfam is a non-profit, charitable organization. Hounsou became a global ambassador for Oxfam. He gave a wonderful speech about the eradication of poverty in UNO in 2009. Probably your life has been very bad for many years. You may have many failures. But your life is not always the same. Your life can change at any moment. If you are always sad and pessimistic, you cannot see opportunities. If you are always happy and optimistic, you will see many opportunities. Be happy now. Look for opportunities. You will surely get opportunities. When an opportunity comes your way, don't escape by saying excuses. Jump into the work. Do it. It will just change your life completely. Success will be yours.
